moned on a special jury, in view of the fact that the panel of special jurors contains less than 100 names, and accord- ingly section 2 of the Ordinance reduces the number of spe- cial jurors summoned from 24 to 17.
Section 4 of the Ordinance increases the remuner- ation of special jurors to twenty-five dollars a day for each day of the trial. In connection with this point it may be mentioned that a public meeting of special jurors was recent- ly held to protest against the previous fee, and in the course of that meeting various special jurors contended, with justice, that their time was worth more than $50 a day to them.
It was thought, however, inexpedient in the interests of litigants to raise the fees of special jurors to so high a figure as $50 a day, and the amount of $25 a day was accord- ingly fixed upon by the government, with the approval of the Judges of the Supreme Court, and the Ordinance was passed in its present form without any motion to raise the fee being made by any Unofficial Member.
